TRIPP -- Lothar T. Maag, Tripp, died at the age of 76 years on Friday afternoon, July 16, 2004, at his home in Tripp after a struggle against cancer.

Funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at Frieden's Reformed United Church of Christ, Tripp, South Dakota, with the Rev. Greg Way officiating. Music will be provided by organist Shelly Finck and the UCC Men's Choir. Interment is in Frieden's Reformed UCC Cemetery, Tripp, South Dakota, with military rites by Jelkin-Harms American Legion Post No. 142.

Honorary casketbearers are Mike Brezina, Cornelius Finck, Denis Fischer Sr., Bill Heisinger, Delray Herr, Willard Maas and David Schmidt. Casketbearers are Chad Bietz, Brett Maag, Carlos Sprecher, Mark Sprecher, Ryan Weisz and Tim Weisz.

Lothar Theodore Maag was born on September 7, 1927, on the family farm in Hutchinson County in South Dakota. His parents were Theodore and Emma (Mayer) Maag. He was baptized and confirmed at the United Church of Christ in Tripp. He married Juanita Weisz on June 7, 1953, at Tripp, where they farmed all their married lives. Lothar attended Maag School District No. 81 until the eighth grade and later attended Tripp High School, graduating in 1945. He served in the Army from 1950-52 in the 549th Army Engineers and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Tripp and was a member of the Jelkin-Harms American Legion Post No. 142 in Tripp for 51 years. He served on the Church Consistory, the Township Board, the Maag District No. 81 School Board, and the boards of Tripp Farmer's Lumber and the Farmer's Union Oil Company.

Lothar loved to spend time with his family, especially attending his grandchildren's many activities. He also loved to spend time farming and gardening.

Grateful for having shared Lothar's life are his wife, Juanita and their five children: a son, Terry Maag and wife, Hope, of Tripp; a daughter, Cheryl (Maag) Coyle and husband, Mike, of Springfield, South Dakota; a daughter, Karen (Maag) Froehlich and husband, Francis, of Tripp; a son, Kenneth Maag of Springfield; and a son, Todd Maag of Tripp; six grandchildren: Chad and wife, JoEllen; Brett; Jenna; Sara; Brittany and Emma; and a sister, Luella (Maag) Sprecher of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Brian; a sister-in-law; two brothers-in-law; and three nephews.
