Lydia Fritzler Dick was born to parents George and Mary Fritzler in the Volga region of Russia in 1896. She always made it very clear they were German and not Russian. She often spoke of the horrors their family and many others endured as Volga Germans close to the turn of the century. She was just a very young girl when her family came to America. The family first settled in Logan County, Colorado and a few moved on to South Dakota, settling in Vale and Belle Fourche later on.
She married Daniel Dick June 5, 1915, in Sterling, Colorado. They had 6 children in Colorado, the youngest, Bill, was the only of their 7 children born in rural Butte County, SD, born in 1931. For a short time, the family lived in the Johnny Spaulding cabin when it was on the river.
Lydia was a wonderful mother and grandmother, she was a 3rd great grandmother when she passed away in 1997. She loved to cook and make kraut bierocks and other wonderful German dishes that she spoiled her family with, some of her recipes becoming a family legacy still made by her descendants. When she got older and had to go to the nursing home, the food and not being able to cook were her biggest complaints!
"Grandma Dick" will forever be missed by us all. She is in our thoughts, memories and hearts forever.
