Cecilia Miska Carlson, age 92, of Pine City, died June 19, 2009.

Cecilia was born May 21, 1917 to George and Helena Poechmann of Rush City.

She attended the Rush City School. She loved all sports and lettered many times. She worked at different homes as a housekeeper and at the family gas station and restaurant. Serving was her hobby and how she met her hubby, Frank Miska. He would always tell her that the quilt she was making, it better be long enough because he will be sleeping under it. They were married on Sept. 30, 1936.

They lived on the 80-acre farm Frank owned east of Pine City. The family outgrew this farm and moved in spring of 1951 to a 120-acre farm west of Pine City. Frank's wishes were "a baker's dozen," that's 13, and his wishes were granted.

Cecilia cut hair at the nursing home for many years. She always had a large garden; she was a waitress at Pine Camp Ballroom, Ma's Diner, Eat Shop and Pine Cafe; she was an in-home county home service provider and also a 4-H leader.

In the early 1960s, the family moved near the Snake River to a smaller acreage west of Pine City. Frank passed away on July 20, 1979.

Cecilia married Roy Carlson at Immaculate Conception Church on Sept. 20, 1983. They spent their first winter at a mobile home park in Harlingen, Texas. Roy passed away on their first anniversary, Sept. 20, 1984. Cecilia continued going to Texas for the next 20 years. She was very active at the Senior Center and a very qualified tutor at the grade school in Harlingen. In February 2005, she sold the mobile home and lived with Domonic Miska of North Branch and then Donald Miska of Pine City.

Cecilia was a life member of the Pine City VFW, a former Pine Area Lion and a Catholic Women's Council member. She was always making something, if it be a meal, a lap robe, doilies, baby quilts, baby bonnets, jewelry, choir cushions and over 600 crocheted caps for the Loving Hands Club. Her warmth was plentiful.

Cecilia is preceded in death by her parents, George and Helena Poechmann; husbands, Frank Miska and Roy Carlson; daughter, Donna Marie Miska; sons, Dale and Dennis Miska; and brothers Leo, Edward and Charles Poechmann. Dennis died five years ago on the same date, June 19, from a serious car accident and he was buried on June 24. It seemed she has a reunion planned. A mother holds her children's hands for a while...their hearts forever.

Cecilia is survived by her children: Darlene (Gordon) Pavek; David Miska, Daniel (Linda) Miska, Dudley (Pat) Miska, Dolores Erickson, Donald Miska, Delphine (Jerome) Miller, Domonic (Teresa) Miska, Dean Miska, Donna (Donald) Ostlund; brother Clement Poechmann; stepdaughters: Shirley Olson, Janice Grussendorf, Joyce Gustafson; 29 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Joyce Poechmann; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and friends.

Funeral Mass was on June 24 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Pine City. Deacon Gene Biever led prayer at the chapel on Tuesday June 23. Father David Forsman officiated at the funeral mass. Music was by Kathy Hagberg. Soloists were Cindy Novy and Jaci Koble (Cecilia's great-granddaughter). Bringing up the gifts was by Eddie France and MaDonna Waletzko; scripture reading was by Pat Waggoner; and nephew Jim Poechmann read of a version of "A Deck of Cards."

Interment was at Calvary Cemetery in Pine City. Cecilia's six sons, David, Daniel, Dudley, Donald, Domonic and Dean Miska were casket bearers.

Arrangements were by Swanson Funeral Chapel, Pine City.
