Jacob G. Ruff

Born February 10, 1890 in Russia, he came with his parents, Andrew and Sophia (Krug) Ruff to America and to Russell, Kansas in 1891. His death occurred on October 5, 1971 at the Russell City Hospital at the age of 81 years, 7 months and 25 days.

Almost a lifetime resident of the Russell community, he received his education and training here, was united in marriage on June 13, 1911, to the former Dillie Blythe and became a vital part of the community. Mr. Ruff engaged in cement and brick construction work most of his adult lifetime. A good workman dedicated to his profession, he believed and practiced the Golden Rule in all his dealings with the public. And there are many buildings, sidewalks, driveways and cisterns in and around Russell that reflect his skill, honesty and pride in his workmanship. He was also a lover of old-time music and enjoyed playing his violin as a hobby and at social functions and weddings. In December of 1966 his wife and devoted helpmate preceded him in death and he continued his residence at their modest home on 116 West 11th St. where the Welcome Mat was always out for the neighbors, relatives and friends.

To treasure and cherish his many acts and deeds of love, devotion and friendship, are a daughter, Mrs. Kelvin (Juanita) Baxter of Russell; 3 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, 1 brother, George J. Russ, 1 sister, Mrs. Charles (Sophia) Wolf, both of Russell; other close relatives and many friends. Preceding him in death also were the parents and 3 brothers, Andrew, Alex and Henry.

Memorial Services were conducted from the Trinity United Methodist Church on Friday, October 8, 1971 at 2 P.M., Pastor Ralph officiating. Organist was Mrs. Eva Michaelis, Soloist, Byren Wood, and hymns sung were: In the Garden and The Lord's Prayer. Casket bearers: Doran Dole, Frankie New, Carl Kilian, Harold Nuss, Carl Motzkus and Harold Wurst. He was laid to rest in the Russell City Cemetery, Russell, Kansas.
