He was the youngest son of Ludwig (Louis) Heinrich and Maria (Mary) Louise Loeffler Wissemann. He graduated from Southern Methodist University and received his master's and bachelor's degree in sacred theology from the Boston School of Theology where he met his future wife. He was ordained on May 6, 1930. He travel abroad, including the Holy Land, for four months. He married Graham Rowland on June 20, 1931 in Greensboro, NC. His father-in-law performed the ceremony. William became the pastor of the Methodist Church in Schulenberg, TX until 1935 when he was called to the Christian Church [now Congregational United Church of Christ] in Greensboro, NC where he had a distinguished 31 year pastorate. He received an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Elon College in 1944. In 1951 the new church building was completed. Beginning in 1942 he also served the UCC church in Pleasant Ridge for many years. They retired to Pleasant Ridge in 1966 where he served full time until 1973. The Wissemans had two children: William and Mary.
