WAMEGO -- Fredrich J. "Fritz" Niehues, 80, Wamego, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999, at a relative's home in St. George.

Mr. Niehues farmed with his father and brother in Nemaha and Marshall counties for many years. He also worked for the Rock Island Railroad from the early 1960s until he retired in 1978. He served in the Navy as a boatswain's mate second class during World War II. He was wounded in action and decorated with the Purple Heart.

He was born Jan. 3, 1919, on a farm east of Kelly, the son of Fredrich and Marie Klunenberg Niehues. He attended St. Bede's Catholic School at Kelly.

Mr. Niehues was a member of the Wamego Senior Citizens Center, Modern Woodmen, the American Legion Post at St. George and St. Bernard's Catholic Church.

He married Wilma Bachman on May 3, 1975, at St. Marys. She preceded him in death on Aug. 9, 1998.

Survivors include three stepdaughters, Judy Spain, St. George, Elaine Robinson, Westmoreland, and Evelyn Childers, Russellville, Ark.; two stepsons, Dennis Bachman, Burlington, and Bob Bachman, Wamego; two sisters, Hilda Magnett, Blaine, and Ida Bloom, Goff; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and five great-great- grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church.

Burial with full military honors will be at the Wamego City Cemetery.

Relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego where a wake service will be at 7 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Bernard's Catholic Church Building Fund or to the Manhattan Area Hospice and sent in care of the funeral home.
