Rev. Monsignor Bernard Schmitz, age 76 of Morris, Indiana, died Monday, March 24, 2008, at Ripley Crossing in Milan, Indiana. Born June 11, 1931 in Cincinnati, Ohio, he is the son of Catherine (Nee: Von Garrel) and Bernard Schmitz.
Monsignor Schmitz was ordained as a priest on May 3, 1957. He served as associate pastor at St. Mary's Church in North Vernon Indiana and Annunciation Church in Brazil Indiana before being appointed to St. Anthony's Church in Morris on July 1, 1970. He served St. Anthony's parish for 37 years, celebrating his Golden Jubilee last year prior to retiring July 1, 2007.
He is survived by his sister Dolores Schmitz of Cincinnati; brother John Schmitz of Tucson, Arizona; brother-in-law Frank Molchan of Montgomery, Alabama; nieces Catherine (Bob) Donald, Caroline (Kirk) Brown and nephews Gregory (Amy) Molchan, Jeff Schmitz and Adam (Claudia) Schmitz. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by sisters Mary Schmitz and Elizabeth Molchan.
Reception of the body will be at 3:15 p.m. Sunday, March 30th, at St. Anthony's Church. His body will lie in state from 3:30 – 8:00 p.m. with a wake service at 7:30 p.m. and from 8 a.m. until the time of service on Monday. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Monday, March 31st, with Monsignor Joseph Shaedel officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family requests memorials to St. Anthony's Cemetery Fund.
