Marie A. Hermesch, 78, Seneca, died Wenesday, March 10, 1999, at a Topeka hospital. She had a heart attack at her home Tuesday and was transferred to Topeka later in the day.

Mrs. Hermesch and her husband farmed south of Kelly until 1974. She also was a cook at Seneca Grade School for several years.

She was born July 13, 1920, on a farm east of Kelly, the daughter of Frederick and Mary Klunenberg Niehues. Her mother died when she was 18 months old, and she was reared by Freda Wessel. She attended St. Bede's School.

Mrs. Hermesch was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church, St. Ann's Altar Society and the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital Guild Card Club. She was a volunteer at Country View Estates in Seneca. She was a former member of St. Bede's Church at Kelly.

She married Adolph Hermesch on Feb. 15, 1939, at Kelly. She and her husband raised eight of their own children, and Mrs. Hermesch also helped raise 10 children that were born to Henry and Magdalene Rottinghaus after Mrs. Rottinghaus died. Mr. Hermesch preceded her in death Dec. 31, 1994. Mrs. Hermesch also was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Cindy Baker, April 9, 1992.

Survivors include four daughters: Lois Moore, McPherson, Donna Baker, Bonner Springs, Janet Baggett, Lenexa, and Sandy Olberding, Topeka; four sons: Mark, Kenneth and Sam, all of Seneca, and Roger, Corning; a brother, Fritz Niehues, Wamego; two sisters: Hilda Magnett, Blaine and Ida Bloom, Goff; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a. m. Saturday at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Seneca with burial in the church cemetery.
