Roger T. Fischer, age 84, of Sheboygan a well known Community Players actor, passed away on Monday, July 27, 2009 at St. Nicholas Hospital with his family beside him.
Roger was born on December 20, 1924 in Sheboygan, a son of the late Theodore and Alma (Maas) Fischer.
He attended Franklin School, Bethlehem School, South Side Jr. High School and Central High School, where he lettered in track and was active with pep rallies and annual school shows. He graduated in 1942 as Vice President of his senior class. He attended Valparaiso University and the UW-Sheboygan Center.
He enlisted in the Army with his lifelong friend, Donald Braatz. After convincing the Army they were cousins, they were assigned together in 560th Anti-Aircraft Artillery at Camp Stewart, GA. While in the Army, he attended the Citadel. He served in the 11th Armored Div. 21st Armored Infantry Company A. in the European and African Theatre of Operations. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of Ardennes Forest. He received two Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Victory Medal, the American Theatre of Operations Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
On September 28, 1946 he was united in marriage to Lois Sparkman at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. They had two children, Barbara and Jeffrey. She preceded him in death on February 28, 2008.
He was united in marriage on November 27, 1975 to Jacqueline Aleff at First United Lutheran Church.
He was employed with the US Postal Service as a clerk in the Sheboygan office and later transferred to the Cascade office from where he retired as a rural carrier in 1980. Together with his wife, Jacqueline they operated JAC Real Estate. He had also been a bank courier for Citizens Bank.
He was an accomplished actor and had appeared in the 1960's movie "Winning", which was filmed in Elkhart Lake, with Paul Newman and Robert Wagner. His acting started at a young age with the play "Toby Helps Out" at Bethlehem Lutheran School. Later in life he was well known with the Sheboygan Theater Company and Community Players. He served on the Community Players Board for 20 years and president of the local theater group from 1973 to 1975 and had also served as Treasurer. His acting career included roles in his favorites, "Everybody Loves Opal", "Born Yesterday, "Roshomon", "Dylan", and "Inspector General". His other acting performances included plays with the Sheboygan Arts Foundation, of which he was a founding member, the John Michael Kohler Art Center and the UW Center-Sheboygan. In his later years, he enjoyed reciting poetry for friends, school groups and community organizations. He especially enjoyed "Casey At The Bat" and performed it for baseball clubs, including the Sheboygan Old Timers, the Sheboygan A's and the children at RCS.
He was a lifelong member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where he had served as an elder, treasurer and usher. He was also a member of the Elks Club 299 of Sheboygan and its National Foundation, the Sheboygan Historical Society, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 15, as well as a life member and past commander of American Legion Post 83. His other memberships included the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, the Sheboygan Baseball Old Timers and life member of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and life member of Taproots at Lutheran High.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Jacqueline; his son, Jeffrey (Mary) Fischer of Kiel; a daughter, Barbara L. Fischer of Brown Deer; two grandchildren Amanda Fischer and Ted Fischer.
He was preceded in death by twin grandsons, Peter and Zachary.
Burial will follow in Lutheran Cemetery with Military Rites accorded by VFW Post 9156.
