Funeral services for C.R. Huntley, 88, who died at his home here Saturday, afer a lengthy illness, were held at the Frost and Sons mortuary Monday. The Rev Glenn Van Vactor officated.
Burial was in the Pine Slope Cemetery with John Beranek, Ford Scalley, A.El Busdicker, Serling Clark, George Fowler and Jam McTavish acting as pallbearers.
Huntley was born March 11,1859, at DeKalb ILL and in 1884 moved to South Dakota where he filed on a homestead near Huron. His father and Uncle founded the town of DeKalb IL in 1853.
He was married Jan 29,1890 at Whitewater Wis to Anna Elizabeth Thompson.
Huntley built and enviable record for himself in the athletic field.He played baseball and helped coach the University of Illinois team. In 1890 he went to England to participate in the Sheffield handicap races. Bad luck followed him on this trip and after spraining a ligament in his leg, he could not take part in the racing event.
The Huron hose team, which Huntley trained and of which he was a member, established a record that has never been broken.
In 1892 he trained the Rapid City hose team which won the tournament in Pierre last year.
Huntley joined the old seekers in the Klondike in 1898 and remained in Alaska for 18 months.
During his later years he served as sheriff of Beadle county SD, police commissioner at Huron and assistant postmaster.
From 1912 to 1918 he served three terms as Beadle County representative in the state legislature.
The Huntley's moved to Belle Fourche in 1935 and have here since that time.
Surviving Huntley are his wife, Anna, a son Harvey R Huntley, present chief of police at Huron, and a daughter Mrs R.A. Smiley of Belle Fourche.
