Dr. Steven M. Hoekstra was born in Cicero, Illinois on June 15, 1961. He died suddenly on July 24, 2009. Steve was preceded in death by his grand parents John and Ema Hoekstra and Herman and Lena Keizer, his parents Ronald and Ann (Cookie) Marlene Hoekstra, and his uncle John Hoekstra. He is survived by his wife, Helen, daughters, Katie and Anna and a son Kyle; his Aunt Joan; his Uncle Jim and Aunt Sharon; his Aunt Martha; his brother Ron; his brother and sister-in-law, David and Susan and their 4 children; his in-laws Conrad and Ann Guichelaar and their family: John and Edith; George and Karla; David and Linda, Sharon and Claudio; Roger and Jennifer; Susan and Ben and other Aunts and Uncles.
Steve is a Distinguished Alumnus from Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Illinois. He received his medical degree from Loyola University Medical School. He did his residency at Wayne State University Hospital in Detroit, Michigan.He was a member of River Oaks Community Church in Elkhart.
Steve was a man of faith, generous, a loving father and husband. He was a skilled surgeon, known for his gentle bedside manner. He practiced medicine at Elkhart General Hospital and the Elkhart Clinic. He was dearly loved by his family and his patients.
The family will greet friends at Stemm Lawson Peterson Funeral Home, 1531 Cobblestone Boulevard, Elkhart, Indiana from 2-8 P.M. Tuesday and also one hour prior to the funeral service. A service of praise and thanksgiving will be held at 2 P.M. Wednesday at the River Oaks Community Church, 58020 County Road 115, Goshen, Indiana. His Uncle Chaplain (COL) Herman Keizer, Jr. (Retired) will officiate. Burial will follow at Sugar Grove Cemetery, Goshen. Memorial contributions may be given to the River Oaks Community Church Benevolent Fund or the Trinity Christian College.
