He was born March 12, 1905, in the Town of Calumet, a son of John and Maria Weinreis Mertens. On April 16, 1936, he married Lucy A. Abler at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Mt. Calvary.
Mr. Mertens was employed as a machinist for Giddings & Lewis for many years, retiring in 1970. He was a member of G & L Oldsters Club and St. Patrick's Church.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Marcia Hletko and her husband Bernard of Eagle River, Gerrie Nimmer and her husband William of Fond du Lac, and Camilla Kandler and her husband Roy of Colgate; two sons, Dennis and his wife Karen, and Alex and Pearl Chapin, all of Fond du Lac; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother Alfred and his wife Eleanor of Ruskin, Fla.; and two sisters Marion Weyrich of Racine and Lucille Huber of Fond du Lac.
Preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters, Evelyn and Eleanor; and two brothers Paul and Harvey.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home, and at 11:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church. The Rev. Joseph Aufdermauer, the Rev. Robert McCormick and the Rev. Leroy Dierbeck will officiate. Burial will follow at St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Johnsburg.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
