Ernest Lee Housley, 89, of the Eastanallee Valley community near Riceville, died Monday morning, Dec. 17, 2007, at Woods Memorial Hospital in Etowah.

A native of Rhea County, he was a son of the late C. Rector and Addie Morgan Housley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Johnnie Millard Housley, on April 6, 2006; and two brothers, Doyal Housley and R.C. Housley.

He was a longtime member of Cedar Springs United Methodist Church. He was a nationally-known dairy leader, developing one of the finest Guernsey herds in the nation, Ridgeway Farm. He served as director of the McMinn County Farm Bureau, president of the McMinn DHIA Association, president of the Tennessee Guernsey Breeders' Association, and on the Board of Directors of the National Guernsey Cattle Club. He was also honored with the Gold Clover Award for outstanding 4-H leadership.

He judged many prestigious cattle shows from coast to coast and in Australia. He and his sons exhibited three National Grand Champions and numerous All-Americans in the Guernsey breed. He received the national Dairy Shrine Dairy Cattle Breeder Award in 1984 in recognition of these and other accomplishments. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Myra Lee and Joe Riley of Athens; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Nancy Housley and Gale and Robin Housley, all of Riceville; four granddaughters, Nan Riley Jenne of Cleveland, Heather Housley of Smyrna, Ga., Holly Housley Griffin of Denver, Colo., and Honna Housley of Davidson, N.C.; two grandsons, Dr. Craig Riley of Etowah, and Halen Housley of San Angelo, Texas; great-grandchildren, Joseph Riley, Benjamin Riley, Joshua Riley, Ashton Jenne, Riley Jenne, Austin Fabritius, Reese Fabritius, Hayes Griffin and Lily Griffin; one sister-in-law, Edna Housley of Athens; and special friends, Anne and Curtis McNeely of Calhoun. Funeral services will be 6:30 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Jerry Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Oran Creasman and the Rev. Ogle Wattenbarger officiating. Burial will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Eastanallee Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Craig Riley, Joseph Riley, Benjamin Riley, Richard Fabritius, Jim Griffin, Mike Jenne, Halen Housley and Wayne Parkinson. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Holston Children's Home, P. O. Box 188, Greeneville, TN 37744, or to the McMinn County Living Heritage Museum, Agricultural Section, 512 West Madison Ave., Athens, TN 37303.
