F.W. "Bill" and Hattie (Hertzke) Baum were both born in Germany and came to America when they were children.

Bill farmed, was a livestock dealer, mayor of Lakota in the 1920's, and was a county supervisor from 1935-1937.

Hattie was a busy housewife, raising eight children. Meta who had been the oldest of the children, died from the flu epidemic during World War I at the age of 16.
