Lt. Jantz Air Crash Victim
Mrs. Willard W. Jantz of Hickory and Mrs. and Mrs. S.J. Jantz of Alden have been officially informed of the death of their husband and son, First Lieutenant Willard W. Jantz, who was previously reported missing in flight off Okinawa April 21. After a thoro investigation of known facts and circumstances, his plane is believed to have been involved in a mid-air collision and to have crashed into the sea approximately 10 miles southwest of the island. It is concluded that he perished when his plane crashed into the water.
Jantz was a graduate of Alden highschool. In august of 1942 he enlisted in the air corps and later won his observer's wings and commission as second lieutenant. He was married to Susan Faye Cannon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Cannon of Alden, in November of 1943. They made their home in Walla Walla, Wash., and to them three sons were born. He was discharged at the end of the war but remained in the officers reserve. In September, 1950, he was called to active duty and in December was sent to Okinawa as radar observer.
Survivors include his wife and three sons, Kenneth, 7; Steve, 5 and Jerry, 4; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S.J. Jantz; a sister, Winifred Jantz, and five brothers, Milton, Eldon, Robert, Ross and Richard.
First Lieut. Mae Hunter and Lieut. James H. Smith, officers in Jantz's squadron, have written letters to the family telling of his complete dependability, honesty, loyalty to his family, high professional ability and character and other commendable qualities.
