The Rev. Asa D. Hockaday, 81, of Hope, died suddenly Saturday morning, March 19, in the Lakeland (Fla.) General Hospital. Born in Gladwin on July 7, 1895, he was a pastor in the East Michigan Conference of the Free Methodist Church for 30 years and also was secretary of the conference for 20 years. He pastored at churches in Montrose, Wolverine, Alpena, North Lansing, Williamston and Fenton. Rev. Hockaday was also a former Justice of the Peace for Billings Township.
He was a veteran of World War I and the first draftee from Genesee County. Prior to entering the service he was employed by the Union Trust and Savings Co. in Flint. Mr. Hockaday and the former Nina Denzer were married on June 7, 1928, in Highwood. She preceded him in death in August 1965. He was married to Lois McIntrye on August 23, 1975, in Flint.
Besides his wife, he is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs. Marcille Frink of Texas and Mrs. Marilyn Osborne of Midland; one brother, Albert of Midland; 3 sisters, Mrs. Beulah Cross of Flint, Mrs. Bertha Knappins of Lakeland, Fla. and Mrs. Anna Loree of Hope; and 5 grandchildren. Services were held today, Wednesday, at 1 p.m. from the Midland Free Methodist Church. The Rev. Dale Woods, the Rev. Earl Fogelsonger and the Rev. Doyle Dennings officiated and burial was in the Highland Cemetery, Gladwin. Arrangements were in charge of the Miner-Bradley Funeral Home, Midland.
