Johannes Gerard la Lau, born on January 10, 1799, in Leiden, passed away on August 10, 1857, leaving a lasting impact on those who knew him. A member and Treasurer of the Society of Dutch Literature, la Lau was a man of quiet distinction, characterized by his continuous contributions to science and literature. Born into a family of French refugees, he faced adversity early in life when, on January 12, 1807, the school he attended collapsed due to the Leiden gunpowder disaster. Buried under the rubble for several hours, la Lau survived with severe injuries. Undeterred, he pursued education and, after recovering, dedicated himself to the study of law. He studied Law at Leiden University from 1816 to 1822, and as such was able to use the title Meester in de Rechten (Master of Laws, Mr.) after graduation. Working as a lawyer in Leiden, he soon realized the need for diversification, leading him to establish a successful printing business in 1830. Married to Christina Johanna Bonte in 1830, la Lau's personal and professional life flourished. Acquiring the Leydsche Courant newspaper in 1844, he demonstrated a keen interest in the well-being of his homeland through his writings and editorial choices. Actively engaged in civic and religious affairs, la Lau served as a Deacon and Elder in the Walloon Congregation. A member of various societies, including the Society of Dutch Literature, he consistently worked for the betterment of society. La Lau's dedication to literature is evident in his translations and writings, showcasing his love for the Dutch language. Despite health challenges, he remained a pillar of strength until his peaceful passing. La Lau's legacy endures as a beloved family man, esteemed citizen, and valued contributor to Dutch literature and society.
