Johann Brandhorst was born to Cordt Juergen Brandhorst and Ilsebein Margaretha Meiers at Hille #32, a farm in the small village of Hille west of Minden. On February 4, 1776, he married Anna Maria Elisabeth Dreyer. The couple had two children, Johann Christian Friedrich and Christina Catherine Margaretha. Elisabeth died on February 11th, 1780 and Johann subsequently married Anna Maria Elisabeth Uphoff on October 22, 1780. They had 8 children while living at Hille #32 -- Johann Friedrich, Carl Jurgen, Carl Friedrich Uphoff, Johann Friedrich, Anna Maria Elizabeth, Anna Charlotte Elizabeth, Johann Carl Heinrich Ludwig, and Carl Christian Friedrich. In an 1828 document specifying the inheritances of her six living children, Elisabeth Uphoff Brandhorst indicated that she was widowed.
