Retired Army Lt. Col. Nickolaus M. Emig, 70, an Army transportation officer and a decorated veteran of World War II, died of cancer Friday at the Manor Care nursing home in Arlington.
A native of Belleville, Ill., Lt. Col. Emig attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. He began his military career in 1943 and was stationed in Europe until 1`947, when he returned to this country, He was awarded the Bronze Star.
He graduated from the Army Transportation School in 1949 and the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., the following year. From 1950-54, he served on the Munition Board at the Pentagon. He then was assigned to the Brooklyn Army Terminal and also served in Newfoundland for two years before transferring to the Transportation Office of the Army Military District of Washington in 1961. He retried in 1964.
Lt. Col. Emig, who lived in Arlington, was a member of the Army and Navy club here.
Survivors include his wife, retired Army Lt. Col. Catherine Piraino Emig of Arlington; two daughters, Carol A. Coulsen and Linda Emig, both of St. Louis; a sister, Erna Murphy of Belleville, and a granddaughter.
