Deceased was born in Carbondale, Pa., August 22, 1845, his parents having settled there on their arrival from England. Later they moved to Norwich county, N. Y., where their son attended school. When 17 years old he enlisted in the Northern army and served with the Army of the Potomac throughout the entire four years. Upon his honorable discharge he returned to his home in Norwich county and entered the Norwich academy, where he qualified for a teacher's certificate.
Coming to California in 1868 via Panama, Mr. Darke landed in San Luis Obispo county, and for 15 years taught school at San Simeon and Cambria. He was elected county superintendent of schools in 1878 and served until 1879, when he was elected county recorder, serving two terms. Later Mr. Darke taught for 19 years in the Nipomo street or Mission school until 1906, when he was again elected superintendent of school. In 1911 he resumed teaching at Cambria, returning three years later to this city, where he taught for one year before retiring.
Mr. Darke was one of the organizers of Fred Steele Post No. 70, G. A. R., and a past commander. He was one of the three remaining members of the post, his passing leaving only A. L. Seeber and M. Polin as surviving. Mr. Darke was married on April 18, 1870, to Miss Martha Wood, an old schoolmate of his in Norwich county. Mrs. Darke passed away in 1890, and their oldest son, Fred Darke, Jr., passed away in 1897.

Conant of Honolulu, Roy E. Darke of Panama, and Mrs. Virgil Vineyard of Fall River, also a grandson, F. E. Darke, Jr., of this city.
