Steven J. Olberding
Seneca-Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church here for Steven J. Olberding, 22, Seneca. Mr. Olberding's body was found floating in the Blue River near Manhattan Sunday.
Riley County police said Mr. Olberding drowned and no foul play was indicated.
Mr. Olberdng was a sophomore at Kansas State University at Manhattan where he majored in agricultural engineering. He previously worked for C. R. industries as a phosphater at Seneca and on his parents farm.
He was born Sept. 16, 1962, at Axtell, the son of Clarence and Eileen Dick Olberding. He lived southwest of Seneca, graduated from Centralia Grade School and from Nemaha Valley High School at Seneca in 1980. As a high school senior he was named the best mathematics and science student in his class. He played high school basketball.
Mr. Olberding was a member and lector of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and a member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 1769, both at Seneca. He was a member of Detachment No. 1, Battery A, 2nd Battalion 130th Field Artilery, Kansas Army National Guard. While at summer guard camp at Fort Sill, Okla., he was awarded a marksmen's medal and recently had passed the Officers Candidate School test.
Survivors include the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Olberding, Seneca; two sisters, Mrs. Diane Keegan, Baileyville, and Mrs. Janice Kramer, Goff; four brothers, Wayne Olberding, Topeka, Dale Olberding, Atchison, and Lynn Olberding and Larry Olberding, both at home; and grandmothers, Mrs. Rose Olberding, Sabetha, and Mrs. Martha Dick, Beatrice, Neb.
Military graveside services will be conducted by his National Guard unit at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery at Seneca. Rosaries will be recited at 3 and 8 p.m. today at Lauer Funeral Home here. Memorial contributions may be made to Knights of Columbus Council No. 1769 at Seneca.
