Edward Lee Kirkpatrick, 86, past president and director of Rockbridge Mutual Fire Insurance Company and retired farmer passed away Wednesday, May 17, in Stonewall Jackson Hospital. He was born in the Alone Community, Rockbridge County, April 18, 1875, a son of the late Samuel Luther Kirkpatrick, who graduated from Washington College under Gen. Robert E. Lee His mother was the late Susan Teaford Kirkpatrick.
He married the late Miss Harriet King of Brunswick County, a former teacher in the public schools for 20 years. They resided at River Glen Farm in the Alone Community for 40 years.
Mr Kirkpatrick was past president and a director of the Rockbridge Mutual Fire Insurance Company for 20 years.
He was a former member of the Kerrs Creek school board.
He was the oldest charter member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church Council for 50 years. During his lifetime, he helped build three Lutheran churches.
For 78 years he owned and operated the River Glen Farm and for the past eight years he retired to the home of his daughter, Mrs Mary Sue Kirkpatrick Harlow, at The Maples on South Main St.
In addition to his daughter, Mrs. Harlow, Mr. Kirkpatrick is survived by two grandsons, Edward L. and Michael K. Harlow, Lexington; two foster sons, Thomas Moose, Baltimore, Md. and Harvey Smith, Roanoke; three sisters, Mrs. Julia K. Stuart, Lexington, Mrs. Alice K. Obenschain, Staunton, Mrs. Eva K. Dunlap, Lanhum Md; three brothers, William M. Kirkpatrick, Lexington, Dr. Luther Kirkpatrick, Easton, Pa and Paul Kirkpatrick of Odessa, De.
