James was the 7th of 8 children of William Gambill and Cynthia Cox. He married Lucy Reeves about 1842 in Ashe County. They had 9 children, including John Frank (1843-1862), Cynthia (1844-1920), Jesse A. (1846-1891), Phoebe (1847-1880), Polly J. "Patsy" (1849-1904), Lydia "Liddie" (1852-1921), Osborn (1854-1855), Preston T. (1856-1937), and Mahalia Caroline (1862-1916).
