Nikolai K. Reimer
1910 - 2009
Nikolai K. Reimer, known to most simply as Nick, was born to Abraham C. and Margaretha Kroeker Reimer on September 12, 1910 in Corn, Oklahoma. He was the middle child of nine children – four older brothers and four younger sisters. All were of the first generation of their family to be born in this country, their parents having been childhood immigrants from South Russia. All but his youngest sister have preceeded him in death.
Nick grew up on farms in the Corn and Gotebo areas of Oklahoma. Shortly before his 20th birthday, his father died leaving a youthful family to find their own way in the world, together with their mother. About four years later, in 1934, in the midst of the great Depression, Nick married Lydia Mathilda Wiebe, the only daughter of the pastor of the Corn Mennonite Brethren Church, Rev. J.J. Wiebe, and his wife Minnie. Initially Nick and Lydia lived off of his wages at the local flour mill, but within time he mastered the art of painting and building, which became his life's work.
In 1945, only weeks before the end of WWII, Nick and Lydia moved their family to California, settling initially in the Dinuba area, and then in Reedley where Nick built the family home.
Nick's guidebook for life was the Bible. Daily reading from the Bible and prayer was his faithful practice. His community, beyond the family, was the church, where in earlier years he served as Sunday School teacher and deacon. He particularly enjoyed singing in men's groups.
In his retirement years he directed his skills to projects, great and small, benefiting his children, grandchildren, friends, church and church-related institutions. Mennonite Central Committee was the beneficiary of many smaller projects.
Those who remain celebrate his life – his wife Lydia; the children: Wilbert and Luetta Reimer, Dalton and Beverly Reimer, Rosalie Carter, Eldene and James Farrar; and grandchildren: Elaine and Mark Paré, Paul and Candy Reimer, Melissa Graybill, Julia Reimer, Charles and Gina Reimer, Sheryl and Robert Curry, Stephanie Farrar, Laura Farrar; twelve great-grandchildren; his sister Margie Leppke; and many relatives and friends.
