Having studied at Westpoint (Class of 1852) he first served in the U.S. Army, in Texas, with the Mountain Rifles. In 1854 he resigned and entered as Second Lieutenant the Imperial French Army to serve in the Crimean War (1854-1855), in the siege of Sebastopol. He was then made Knight of the Legion of Honor. Later he participated in an operation in Algiers and was in command of a regiment during the siege of Paris in 1870. After the fall of the Second Empire he returned to America.
