Born Nov. 18, 1927, in Quincy, Mr. Hapke was a son of Vernon Sr. and Linda Coggeshall Hapke. He married Jill Price on Feb. 5, 1978, in Camp Point. She survives.
Raised in Pea Ridge and a lifelong farmer, Vernon farmed in Adams and Brown counties. He was an innovative farmer who received his Master's Degree in Animal Husbandry from the University of Missouri at Columbia.
Vernon was well known as a man who could do just about anything. He enjoyed woodworking, growing hydroponic tomatoes, and building "The Sawmill", for which he also designed and built a blade sharpener.
Vernon received the 2007 Farmer of the Year Award from the Brown County Soil and Water Conservation District.
