Johann Georg Zierdt, called "big George", born August 27, 1818 in Kleinensse, Hesse, Germany emigrated to America in June 1840 to Hazleton, Pa. His younger brother, Georg Zierdt, known as "little George" emigrated around 1849 to Hazleton, Pa.
Their nephew, Nicolaus Zierdt, born November 8, 1849, Kleinensee, emigrated February / March 1868 to Hazleton then went to Wabasha, MN. Andrea Zierdt, born November 5, 1806 in Grobensee, Saxony, Germany in the neighbor village of Kleinensee, (both 15 km east from Bad Hersfeld,) emigrated 1865 and arrived at Baltimore May 1855, went to Wisconsin.

Little Georg arrived in New York City at age 14 on the ship ALFRED from Bremen on April 24, 1848, accompanied by his mother Catherine Elizabeth Brill Zierdt.

Served as Private, Company F, 147th Pennsylvania Infantry, GAR in the Civil War.

"Little Georg" married first, Anna Barbara Degenhart sometime before 1854. Their son, William was born Jul 20, 1855. They had another eight children. After Barbara Brandau's death he married Lavina Schmaltz on Mar 13, 1881 in the Grace Reformed Church, Hazleton, Pa. She was the widow of Johann Georg Bahrt of Hazleton, Pa. It is believed now that Anna Barbara Degenhardt and Anna Barbara Brandau are one in the same person. Anna using her Mother's (Anna Gertrude Degenhardt ) married name ( Brandau ) after moving to America. Death certificates list Degenhart as the mother of William and the rest of the children have Anna Barbara Brandau as the mother. Birth records for Anna Barbara do not include a Fathers name.
