Phyllis Irene Smith, 84, Soldier, died Wednesday, September 23, 2009, at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.
She was born December 3, 1924, in Holton, to Frank Robert and Aletha Mae Musgrove Utterback. She graduated from Holton High School in 1942.

Phyllis lived most of her life in Jackson County and had been a resident of the Soldier community since 1951. She was a member of the Soldier Christian Church and taught the adult Sunday School class for many years. She was the school secretary for both the elementary and high schools in Soldier, and when the new Jackson Heights Elementary School opened, she worked in the school office until she retired in 1985. Phyllis loved to travel and after her retirement, she and her sister visited all 50 states as well as Guam, Australia and New Zealand. She was a former member of the Soldier Bridge Club, the Rosebud Community Club, the Wednesday Club, and the Order of Eastern Star #46 in Hanna, Wyoming. She was an active member of the Soldier Senior Citizens and the Wednesday Pitch Club. Phyllis was an avid quilter and she made many beautiful creations for family and friends through the years. She held a quilting class on Tuesday nights in her home where she was always willing to help a beginner learn the art of quilting.

On October 5, 1943, Phyllis married Glenn S. Smith in Holton. He died May 28, 1977. She was also preceded in death by her parents; five sisters, Virginia Utterback, June Jessen, Jeanne Burris, Lucille Reese, and Rebecca Dolling, and two grandchildren, Keith and Kyle Smith.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Long (Don), Peoria, Arizona; three sons, Ronald Smith (Cheryl), Overland Park, Gregory Smith (Patti), Papillion, Nebraska, and Douglas Smith (Jane), Lenexa; one sister, Nancy Hysong, Medicine Bow, Wyoming; nine grandchildren, Michelle Woerner (Kevin), Linn, Stacey Bray, Overland Park, Brian Smith (Jennifer), Wichita, Robert Smith, Bristol, Connecticut, Mark Smith, Omaha, Nebraska, Angela Smith (Lloyd Hoshaw), Omaha, Nebraska, Rebecca Lutz (Steven), Surprise, Arizona, Scott Long, Phoenix, Arizona, and Emily Smith, Lenexa; nine great-grandchildren, Jasmine Brison, Jaden Bray, Jolene and Justine Woerner, Madelyn and Mason Smith, Devin and Samuel Hoshaw, and Cheyenne Lutz; and many nieces and nephews as well as neighbors and friends in the Soldier area.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 26, 2009 at the Soldier Christian Church in Soldier.

Burial will be in the Soldier Cemetery.

Family will greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Memorial contributions may be made to Soldier Christian Church, sent in care of Mercer Funeral Home, P. O. Box 270, Holton, KS 66436.
