Frances "Fannie" Evelyn Carstairs Francis Voronoff co-authored a book with her third husband Dr Serge Voronoff about surgically implanting animal glands as a way of extending human life. Her first marriage resulted in a daughter Barbara "Joe" Carstairs, known as "the fastest woman alive," as a world champion powerboat. Her second marriage to Englishman Francis Francis, when she became Frances Francis, resulted in two children, a daughter, Frances Francis, and son, Francis Francis Jr. This scramble of names was further complicated when her trust officers after her death discovered the fine print where Jabez Bostwick had stipulated that all of his heirs must be American citizens at birth.

Jabez Abel Bostwick

Jabez Abel Bostwick (b. 1830 Delhi, NY – d. 1892 Mamaroneck, NY) was a railroad magnate and a partner of John D. Rockefeller in Standard Oil. He moved to Ohio and worked on a farm as a youth, but didn't like it and took a job as a bank clerk in Covington, Kentucky. After he became a cotton broker in Cincinnati but quickly moved on to New York. He found the oil business by chance and became a refiner then he moved into drilling. He had interests in Franklin, Pa. He joined with the Standard Oil Trust when it was founded by in 1872 by John D. Rockefeller. He became wealthy.

He left the oil business and in 1886 was elected President of the New York and New England Railroad Company. He held this office until January 1892. He was later the friend and adviser of Presidents Grant, Hays and Arthur, and supported Secretary William C. Whitney, in his plans for an enlarged American Navy.

He was also an inventor and patented several safety devices such as the Bostwick gate –metal sliding gate still in use today. He was a generous donor to charity. He gave money to Fifth Avenue Baptist Church (of which he was a member); he built and endowed Emanuel Baptist Church, Suffolk Street, New York with a $50,000 donation. In Mamaroneck, he aided the Roman Catholic parish and other religious bodies. He gave money to Forrest College in North Carolina.

Bostwick believed that education should make one self-reliant by the development of natural talents, that girls should have the same practical training as boys, and that the daughters of the well-to-do should be equipped to earn their own livelihood — radical thoughts in his day. One of his daughters became a surgeon. A devout Baptist Bostwick never drank or used tobacco. He was a member of the Union League, Manhattan, New York Yacht, Country, Down Town and Riding Clubs. There was a stable fire at his 14-acre summer home 'Friedheim' at Mamaroneck in August of 1892. Bostick rushed in to save his horses and carriages. He and two stable hands were killed. At the time of his death, his fortune was $12 million.
