Jesse Lee's Capt.
HALSEY, ALEXANDER LEMUEL: FAG #60506528
Capt., Co. B, 4th VSL. Commissioned Capt. of Cav. on 6/15/62. On August's 1/27/63 list of VSL Officers. Later served in Co. I2, 21st Va. Cav., Enl. on 4/1/63 at Wytheville.

The VSL stands for Virginia State Line. It was a unit formed from men from Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and North Carolina.

It's commander was General John Floyd, a Virginian politician whom turned out to not be much of a military man.

The reason most men in these states joined was the condition that Floyd had promised, being that the men under his command would always stay in the area of their homes.

This was exactly what most soldiers wanted to do. Naturally this did not go over well with the Confederate government.

When Floyd proved to be inept, the VSL was disbanded.
Most of the North Carolina boys joined the 21st Virginia Cavalry as most of it's leaders were from Grayson County, Virginia.

The 21st visited Letcher County, Kentucky during the war as many of the men of the 21st were kin to many people in South East Kentucky.
was always told that the North Carolina Brown boys visited their Kentucky Brown cousins at this time.

He later served in Co. I2, 21st Va. Cav. PWR Company I (2nd) (Formerly called Company C, Captains: William J. Paisley, Alexander L. Halsey, M. V. B. Norman)

The 21st Virginia Volunteer Cavalry Regiment was a cavalry regiment raised in Virginia for service in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War.
It fought in Southwest Virginia, East Tennessee, and the Shenandoah Valley.

Virginia's 21st Cavalry Regiment was organized in August, 1862, with companies which had served in the Virginia State Line.
The unit was assigned to W.E. Jones' and McCausland's Brigade, and in April, 1864, it contained 317 effectives.

This Unit was organized in August 1862, with companies that had served in the Virginia State Line.

During mid-April, 1865, the regiment disbanded. Its field officers were Colonel W.E. Peters, Lieutenant Colonel David Edmundson, and Major Stephen P. Halsey.
