Hildegard A. Winkel, 83, formerly of Fur Farm Road, went to her Eternal Home on Tuesday evening, May 8, 2001 at Calumet Homestead Rehabilitation Center, New Holstein, where she resided the past four years. She is the former Hildegard Mertens born Nov. 24, 1917 in Charlesburg, daughter of the late Joseph and Barbara Meyer Mertens. She attended St. Charles School in Charlesburg.
On June 12, 1939, she married Anton Winkel at St. Charles Catholic Church in Charlesburg. The couple farmed in the town of New Holstein. Anton preceded her in death on April 13, 1975.
She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in New Holstein and the Christian Mothers Society. Hildegard loved spending time
with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved her family and friends, gardening and her flowers.
Survivors include her children; Barbara (Eugene) Gustafson of Carney, Mich., Roger Winkel of Chilton, Lee Winkel of Chilton; four grandchildren, Gerald Gustafson and fiancee Roberta Zahoric of Carney, Mich. Allen Gustafson and fiancee Kari Kortens of Fremont, Sandy Gustafson and fiancee Jeff Miller of Plymouth,
Yvonne (Mark) Herrin of New Holstein; three great-grandchildren, Mallory, Mac and Angela Herrin; two brothers, Norman (Loyola)
Mertens of New Holstein, Elmer (Elaine) Mertens of Chilton; one sister-in-law, Isabel Winkel of New Holstein; nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, May 11, 2001 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church with the Rev. Frank Weber officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
