LORRAIN AND ELAINE RAYBUCK

The thriving, 124-acre farm owned by Lorrain and Elaine Raybuck lies across the boundary between Oliver and Ringgold townships. near Worthville, and has been owned by the direct line of Raybucks for five generations. The first purchase of land was made by Jonas Raybuck, who came to Jefferson County from Northumberland County.

The Raybuck name is German, and is probably a derivation of Rebuck (or Rehbuck). A town by this name (Rebuck) still exists in Northumberland County, and another of our Jefferson County Century Farm families, the Reitzes, came here from that town.

Jonas (1805-1880), was the son of Adam and Maria Haupt Raybuck of the eastern county. He married Susanna Cathryn Knarr (1818-1891).

Shortly after Jonas" death, his son Emanuel took over the farm in 1881. Emanuel, who was born in 1841 and died in 1890, was married to the former Mary Caylor (1843-1901).

Two years after his mother's death in 1903, son Charles Raybuck (1878-1960) became owner of the land. He was married to Ella Dobson (1891-1978).

Their son Herman Raybuck, born 1911, became owner of the farm in 1961. His wife was the former Abbie Snyder, born 1914, who died in 1984.

In 1965, the present owners, Lorrain and Elaine (Smathers), were deeded the farm by his mother. They had been married in 1958, and now have three chidren, Abby, wife of John Curry, Kevin, married to Paula Fockler, and Mark, still at home. They also have two grandchildren, Matthew and Adam Curry.

Elaine's family, the Smatherses, are also an old Jefferson County family, as her ancestor, Christian Smathers, moved here in the 1850's from Clarion County. His father, Christian Sr., had settled first in what was then Armstrong County around 1800, coming there from Luzerne County. Christian Smathers Jr. had married Susanna Harriger, of another old Clarion County family, but moved to Jefferson after her death and remarried.

Their old family farmhouse, which sits high on a hill overlooking the farm, still looks much as it must have when first buildt, although it has been extensively remodeled. The atmosphere of country living in "the great old day" still prevails, as Elaine has decorated the interior with many antiques and country craft items. Decorating is obviously a favorite hobby of hers, while Lorrain's pride and joy is his fine herd of beef cattle.
