Eugene (Gene) Skiba, age 85, of New Brighton. Beloved husband, father, grandfather. Writer, editor and "conscience of New Brighton". Passed away June 5, 2009. Born in Mounds View Township August 16, 1923, and a New Brighton Resident since 1942. Preceded in death by parents, Clement and Rose (Blanski); brothers, James and Clement, Jr.; and sister, Esther. Survived by wife of 50 years, Vernice (Nee Jouppe); daughters, Laurie (Larry Miranda), Melissa (Mark Salisbury), Janelle; and son, Gene Jr. (Donna); grandchildren, Forest Skiba Miranda; Matthew, Brain, Maria, Michael, Katharine and Ann Salisbury; Jasmine, Hanna and Cameron Skiba; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Graduated in 1941 from Marshall HS; served as 1st Lieutenant and navigator in Air Force During World War II; editor of Rose Tribune and New Brighton Bulletin for 29 years. Lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, founding member of New Brighton Area Historical Society, and author of A Centennial History of New Brighton. When Gene retired September 2, 1988, Governor Rudy Perpich Declared that day "Gene Skiba Day" and WCCO Radio named him "Good Neighbor of the North." As editor of the New Brighton Bulletin, he wrote a weekly column "This and Data" which was called "the conscience of New Brighton."

Visitation Tuesday 5-8 pm at Methven-Taylor Funeral Home 706-4th Ave NW, New Brighton. Mass of Christian Burial, 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 835-2nd Ave NW, New Brighton (651-633-8333), with visitation 1 hour prior to mass at Church. Interment St. John's Cemetery.
