Funeral services were held Wednesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Plankinton. Burial was in White Lake Cemetery. She was born on May 10, 1911, in Effingham, Ill., to Mr. and Mrs. William Westendorf.
In 1915, she moved with her family to Kimball, where she attended school.
On June 5, 1929, she married Henry Gardner in Kimball.
They lived in Crystal Lake Township for 31 years and farmed west of Stickney for 40 years.
In 1970, she and her husband retired and relocated to White Lake.
After her husband died, she moved to Aurora Manor, Plankinton. She later moved to Stickney Manor, then Aurora-Brule Nursing Home, White Lake, in August 2005.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid in a number of area churches, Busy Bee Extension Club and senior citizens group.
She is survived by three children: Shirley Scheetz and husband Art, Mitchell; Betty Kristensen, Plankinton; and Jack Gardner and wife Sharon, White Lake; seven grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Marie Mead, Corsica; and several nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband in August 1983, her parents, a son-in-law, Raymond Kristensen; four brothers: William, Frank, Tony and George Westendorf; and four sisters: Mani Barcum, Edith Gardner, Theresa Hutmacher and Agnes Schmitt.∼MARRIED: Henry Gardner, 1929
