Lt. Col. Retired Herbert A. Wessels of Austin and San Antonio, Texas, passed away on September 30, 2009, in Austin, Texas, at the age of 90. He was born July 18, 1919, on a farm in Prairie Valley near West Point, Texas. He was a cotton farmer at an early age, and later a member of the United States Army where he was a Veteran of World War II. He earned the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star along with many other military honors. He also was retired from the United States Postal Service.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Maxine Wessels in 2003; parents, Herman and Annie Wessels; sisters, Stella Wessels, Delores Huebel and brother-in-law, Ike Petras.

He is survived by his children, Bruce Wessels of Costa Rica and wife Marta, Greg Wessels of Fredericksburg, Tex., Jennifer Gregorie of Austin, Tex., and husband Richard, Mark Wessels of Corpus Christi, Tex.; grandchildren, Kassy Piper and husband Mike, Katy Symank and husband Ryan, Bridget Stehling and husband Shawn, Lyndsie Gregorie and Melissa Wessels; great-grandchildren, Kirsten, Bradley, Jacob, and Kaitlyn Piper and Lexi Symank.

He is also survived by sisters, Amanda Petras, Charleen Koopman and husband Ray, and brother-in-law, Clinton Huebel; and nieces and nephew.
