Leona Hilda Koepke Bauman, 91 of Topeka, died Sunday, March 27, 2005 at Rolling Hills Nursing Center. She was born Oct. 30, 1913 in Hoskins, NE, the daughter of William and Caroline Buegel Koepke.

Mrs. Bauman left the farm at age 12 to work in Norfolk, NE, where she was able to complete high school at age 16. She then taught at rural schools until she moved to Fort Morgan, CO, where she met and married Edward E. Bauman on January 8, 1939. The couple then moved to Sidney, NE, in 1942, where Mr. Bauman worked as an auto sales manager and auto body repairman. Together, they raised 6 children. Mrs. Bauman continued her teaching career in small rural schools near Sidney for 26 years. She pursued her dream of a college degree after all her children were in school, and finally received a B.A. from Chadron State College in 1970 at age 56. Being a teacher was a major source of pride and gratification for her throughout her life.

A cherished mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she is survived by six children: Sherri Robinson and husband, Jim, of Sidney, NE; Dr. Randy Bauman and wife, Rita of Port Angeles, WA; Dee (DeLois) Smidt of Topeka; Dr. Loren Bauman and wife, Diane, of Lewisville, NC; Mavis Bauman of Sparta, NJ; and Dr. Marci Bauman-Bork and husband, Larry, of Topeka; and 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Mrs Bauman was preceded in death by her parents, siblings and two granddaughters, Brigitta and McKenzie Bork.
