formerly of Farrell, passed away at 9:55 a.m. Thursday (3-23-06) in O'Brien Memorial Nursing Home, Masury. He was 80.
Born Jan. 9, 1926, in Farrell, he was the son of the late
Michael and Anna (Salantji) Uhalie (Ujhelyi). Stephen married the former Zora Pokrajac on April 30, 1955. She passed away Oct. 28, 1994. He was a lifelong member
of the community. He was a member of St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church, Hermitage. Stitch, as he was called by his friends, attended Farrell schools. He celebrated his high school graduation in May 1944 on the deck of the U.S.S. Tuscaloosa during World War II.
For his honored service to our country, he received the
Pacific and American Theater Ribbons, Philippine Liberation
Ribbon, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign
Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal and the China Service Medal. Steve retired from the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. on Oct. 31, 1984, after 37 years of service.
Prior to his illness, Steve had been an active member of
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5286, Farrell, where he
also served as chaplain and on the funeral honor guard. He was also a member of Mercer County Amateur Radio
Club; Mercer County Local Emergency Planning Committee
and Skywarn; Sharon Westinghouse Retirees Association;
First Slovenian Workingmen's Educational Club, Sharon; and Mahoning Valley Browns Backers Fan Club.
He will be dearly missed by his daughter, Karen; and a sister, Irene, wife of Louis Matricardi, Tonawanda, N.Y.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Stephen was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, Mary Puhala, Ann Sorrells, Helen Lazor, Margaret Funelli and Elizabeth; and four brothers, Michael, Nicholas and twins George and Joseph.
