E. L. Gene Vaughan Sr., died peacefully at home surrounded by his family, June 26, 2009.

Born October 29, 1921 in Houston, Texas, he was 87 years old.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Ann Cobb Vaughan, son Jim, and brother James K. Vaughan Jr.

He is survived by: his children, Lee Vaughan and wife Carolyn, Sue Ann Vaughan, Lou Snead-Callaway of Bay City, Timothy Kiely Vaughan, of San Antonio, Frank Cobb Vaughan, Bay City, Mary Vaughan Lester and husband Howard of San Francisco, Anna Vaughan Spears and husband Roy of Kerrville, and Cathy Vaughan Coale and husband Matt of Fredricksburg; grandchildren, Eugene Le Cand Vaughan,III (Tres) of Garland, Patrick Grant Vaughan and wife Bronwyn, Erin V.Bass and husband Gregg all of Rockwall, , Katy Snead Pelletier and husband Mike, Jenny Snead Howell and husband Chris of Katy, Logan Alexandra Vaughan, of San Antonio, Frank Cobb Vaughan, Jr., and Seth Sumers Vaughan both of Sugarland, Matt N. Spears and wife Lori of San Antonio, Jacqulin Ann Spears of New York, NY., Alexandra Witt Spears, Wallis Vaughan Spears, Mary-Anna Catherine Spears of Kerrville, William Matthew and Suzanne Frances Coale of Fredericksburg; great grandchildren, Patrick Owen Vaughan of Rockwall, Michael Vaughan Pelletier, Kathleen Kiely Pelletier, Lauren Elizabeth Pelletier, Paul Christopher and Annie Catherine Howell of Katy, Hannah and Bailey Spears of San Antonio; sister, Nan Vaughan Kennemer of Rio Vista; sister-in-law, Kathryn Cobb Collins of Bay City.

He was actively involved in his childrens activities including Bay City Little League, Bay City High School Booster Club, Pony of America Association, Matagorda County 4-H Club. He was a life long member and supporter of Holy Cross Catholic Church and Holy Cross School, Bay City Rotary Club, charter member of Bay City Country Club, member and past President of Matagorda County Board of Realtors, and member of the Matagorda County Fair and Rodeo Association.

He graduated from St. Thomas High School in Houston, attended Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama until he enlisted in the Army to serve in WWII. He served in the 35th Calvary at Ft. Riley, Kansas as a Second Lieutenant. Following his discharge from the army, he moved to Bay City with his bride. He was actively engaged in ranching and farming with his father in-law, F.G. Cobb. Later he entered the real estate field becoming a real estate broker and appraiser. He established Vaughan Real Estate and Development Company. He designed and developed Marymount and Valhalla residential additions of Bay City. He later became an active participant in turf farming and founded Vaughan Turf Farm. At the time of his retirement he was the longest practicing real estate broker in Bay City. He was a devoted husband and father. His Catholic faith and his family were the cornerstones to all that he was and did here on earth.

The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday June 28, 2009 at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

The Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Monday June 29, 2009. The interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City.

Pallbearers: Tres Vaughan, Patrick Vaughan, Cobb Vaughan, Seth Vaughan, Matt Spears, Mike Pelletier, Sergio Reyes, Pat Thomas.

Honorary Pallbearers: Leonard Cornelius, Howard Lester, Burt Huebner, Joe Birkner, Gerald Coale, Chris Coale.

Memorials can be made to Holy Cross Catholic School or the charity of your choice.
