Mr. Robert H. "Bob" Howell, 82, of 2526 Lake Drive South, Quincy, died at 8:22 a.m. Monday (September 14, 2009) in the Illinois Veteran's Home.

Born November 4, 1926 in Griggsville, Illinois, Robert was a son of Sam and Letha Swisher Howell. He married Juanita King on November 21, 1947 in Quincy. She survives.

Robert was an active member of The Crossing and served as a Deacon and Trustee when the church was known as Payson Road Christian Church. An avid card player and Chicago White Sox fan, he also loved mushroom hunting and gardening. Robert will be remembered for starting gardens for others in their yard and for the garden he kept at the church and especially for his generosity by always sharing the "fruits of his labor".

Mr. Howell served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army during WW II.

Mr. Howell was a self employed contractor and founded Howell Construction, a business he passed on to his son, Daniel.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita; two sons, Daniel Howell and Dennis Howell both of Quincy; three daughters, Linda Niehoff and her husband Thomas, Carol Howell and June Jacobs and her husband Bill all of Quincy; six grandchildren, Tammy Hoschar and her husband Jeff, Carrie Kellenberger, Cassy Roth and her husband Curtis, Michael Santucci, Rheagan DeVerger and Murphy Dochterman; eight great grandchildren, Bria, Jared, Dylan, Hunter, Riley, Madison, Kaitlyn and Jordan; two sisters, Betty Landess and her husband Donald of Quincy and Helen Clay and her husband Les of Orlando, FL; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Mr. Howell was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Tyler Hoschar; three brothers, Raymond Howell, Edward Howell and Walter Howell; and five sisters, Jessie Surratt, Glenna Brass, Erma Cox, Delores Connour and Donna Evans.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 10:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by Pastor Jerry Harris. Burial with Military Honors by Payson V.F.W. Post 2061will be in Akers Chapel Cemetery near Plainville.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 and Friday morning until the time of services at the funeral home.
