Resided in Preus Strohen until 1892 (1891 according to the 1900 federal census) when he came to Illinois. He first visited the USA in 1885 and three of his children, William, Carrie, and Fred emigrated to this country before him. Fred and Sophia brought their other children in 1892 and settled on a farm in rural Boody, Macon, Illinois. In 1900 they were living with their son, Fred.
The 1900 federal census indicates that Fred and Sophia Had 13 children, 10 of whom were alive in 1900.
This family retained the Vatthauer spelling with a few exceptions.
