Colonel of the STASI, he was arrested when a plan of his defection into West Germany was discovered. Although he had long given up on this plan he was tried and sentenced to death. He was executed by a shot in the neck. The execution was kept secret, his wife only learned of his death after the Reunification. He was cremated at the South Cemetery and buried in an unknown plot. The sentence was overturned in 1993. He was the last person to be executed in Germany.
