Hilbert was the son of Mrs. Jessie (nee Vander Graff) Renerda. He came to America with his mother in 1912. She soon married his step-father, Fred Goris, on 16 Apr 1914. The family lived in Tippecanoe County, Indiana where Fred was a farmer and later worked for Purdue University.
Hilbert married Helen Margret Reinecke on 14 May 1938. They were the parents of 5 children.
At the time of his death, Hilbert was 93 years, 6 months and 26 days old. He was buried next to his wife, Helen, who passed away in 1985.
Hilbert was also preceded in death by a son, James, who died in 1993.
