Worked at Aluminum Industries, Inc., Cincinnati, OH during World War II. In 1941 he attempted to enlist in the service after Pearl Harbor. Each service turned him down due to a heart condition (a damaged valve) caused by rheumatic fever.

He opened a restaurant and confectionery at 202 W. Fourth Street, Covington, KY and sold it June 1948.

He was appointed Police Chief of Erlanger, KY in 1948. He and Marcella also owned and operated the Erlanger Flower Shop on Dixie Highway in Erlanger until 1951.

He went to work for Ford Transmission plant in Cincinnati, OH in 1951 and the family moved to the suburbs east of Mt. Washington and Cincinnati, OH.

A wet or blind heart surgery failed to repair the heart problem in early 1959. On August 14, 1959 he underwent open heart surgery to repair the problem at Cincinnati's Holmes Hospital. The surgery was performed by Dr. Helmsworth. At the time he was one of ten physicians in the world that could perform this operation. The operation was performed by diverting the blood stream from the heart to a heart lung machine while surgeons work on the still open heart.
