COLE, Dora Mae CHALUPA -- Dora Mae CHALUPA COLE, 93, of Washington, Iowa, formerly of Pleasant Plain, died Saturday, July 4, 2009, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton following a brief illness.

A celebration of life service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Jones-Eden Funeral Home in Washington, Iowa, with the Rev. Sallie Graves officiating. Interment will be in Friends Cemetery in Pleasant Plain.

Visitation began at noon today at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 5-7 p.m.

A memorial has been established to the hospice unit of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Mrs. COLE was born March 5, 1916, in Hedrick, the daughter of Guy and Ethel ANDERSON. She married Leroy CHALUPA in March 1935. He died in 1965. She married Floyd COLE in March 1974. He died in 1979.

Mrs. COLE graduated from Peasant Plain High School. She was a homemaker until her first husband's death, and then she became a nurse's aide in the maternity ward at Jefferson County Hospital.

Mrs. COLE enjoyed sewing, cooking, quilting, making porcelain dolls and dressing the dolls she made in period costumes.

Survivors include one daughter, Shirley HALVERSON and husband Keith of Marion; one son, Dennis CHALUPA and wife Bobbi of Newton; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Charline DEUTSCHMAN of California.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Beverly.

She had bequeathed her body to the college of medicine at the University of Iowa in the interest of science. Memorial services will be held Thurs. 2 p.m. at the Washington United Methodist Church. Born July 6 1940 in Jefferson County, dau. of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Chalupa. Grad. Pl Pl High School and attended Parsons College; married Gordon Watson July 31 1960. Surviving are husband and one son, Paul Eric, at home; her mother, Mrs. Leroy Chalupa, Pleasant Plain; one brother, Dennis Chalupa, Iowa City, and one sister, Mrs. Shirley Halverson, Cedar Rapids. She was preceded in death by her father."
