John was born July 13, 1933, in Laurel, Md., to H.J. Bertling and Mary L. Garner Bertling. At the age of 17, John joined the U.S. Navy and proudly and honorably served his country during the Korean War. He was a decorated U.S. Navy veteran, receiving the National Defense Service Medal, the Navy Occupation Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the Korean Service Ribbon with two stars.
John was a hard worker and prided himself on the excellence of his home building craft. He was recognized as one of the best home builders in Howard County, Md.
He was married to Gladys for 55 years and was the proud father of three children, Cindy, Mark and David, and was a "doting" grandpa to his grandchildren.
Mark said of his dad, "Dad listened intently when God's Word was being read to him."
Survivors: Wife, Gladys Bertling; sons, Mark Bertling and wife, Tana, and David Bertling; daughter, Cindy Morrow and husband, Charlie; grandchildren, Jillian ValDenegro and husband, Jose, Julie Bertling, Lindsey Bertling, Jonothan Bertling, John Morrow and Tiffany Morrow; stepgrandchildren, Marianda Hamic and Brenae Schellhas; three great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
