His obituary from the Manawa Advocate:

CARL E. STURM DIES

Manawa lost one of its most prominent and beloved citizens in the death Saturday morning of Carl E. Sturm, age 63. He passed away at his home after a short illness just the day after he resigned his position as Chairman of the Waupaca County Board.

Carl Sturm, who was born on a farm here in Manawa, a farm still owned and operated by the Sturm family, was President of the nationally known dairy products company of Manawa, A. Sturm and Sons, Inc., a company owned and managed by he and his three brothers, Clarence, Paul, and Arthur.

While Carl Sturm was active in many civic and business affairs in Manawa, perhaps his greatest service in public life was his contribution to Waupaca County. He was elected to the County Board April 19, 1949. He served on the Finance Committee of the Board (1949 - 1952) and was Chairman of the Finance Committee from 1953 to 1961. In 1949 - 1950, he was a member of the Committee on Salaries of County Officers and was Chairman of that Committee in 1951. He was a member of the Judiciary Committee of the Board (1949 - 1951), the Auditing Committee (1953 - 1955), the Committee on Committees (1960) and Chairman from 1961 to the present time.

Carl Sturm's greatest versatility was evidenced by his work on many other Board committees: Education and Agriculture, Chairman (1961 - 1968); Executive Committee which he originated, Chairman from 1966 to the present time; Law Enforcement Committee, Chairman (1968). In 1961, he was elected Chairman of the Waupaca County Board and has served in that capacity of leadership with great distinction until his resignation because of ill health just last week. He was also chairman of the Waupaca County Republican Party and of the 7th Congressional District Republican Party.

In Manawa, he was President of A. Sturm and Sons, Inc., President of Sturm Farms, Inc., and President of A. Sturm and Sons Foundation, Inc. He was Vice President of the Sturm Building Corporation and he had been President of the Manawa Theatre Corporation and the Manawa Dam Corporation during the life of those corporations.

On behalf of the Sturm family, in honor of their parents, the late A. Sturm and his wife Paulina, Carl Sturm and his brothers officially presented the Manawa Public Library to the city two years ago.

Carl Sturm was active in St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Manawa throughout his lifetime. He was former Chairman of the Church Council and Chairman of the Building Committee when the new edifice of the church was constructed.

The Farmers State Bank of Manawa was especially indebted to Carl Sturm. His father was one of the founders of the bank and in April, 1944, Carl was elected to the Board of Directors of the bank to fill the vacancy of the late F.R. Meiklejohn, and he has been a director of the bank for 24 years. In January 1949, Carl Sturm was elected Secretary of the Loaning Committee of the bank, a position he held until he became Vice President of the bank to fill the vacancy of the late Fred J. Gehrke in July 1957. On January 11, 1968, Carl Sturm was elected President of the bank.

Carl Sturm was a charter member of the Manawa Lions Club and a Past President and long-time director of that civic organization which has contributed so much to Manawa.

Carl Sturm's business activities extended far beyond Manawa. For ten years he was a Member of the Board of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and was Vice Chairman and Chairman of that important organization. He was the first non-Chicagoan ever to serve in that capacity. He served on several important committees, was elected Chairman in 1957 and reelected in 1958. For years, he represented the Exchange on various missions in Washington.

Carl Sturm was also a member of the Chicago Board of Trade, one of the most outstanding boards of its type in the world.

So it is evident that Carl Sturm, a home town boy, by his own ability and his tireless efforts, in addition to his civic and his religious work in our community, in addition to his local business career which won for him the respect of thousands of Waupaca County men and women whom he has aided in so many ways, progressed to the front in important work far beyond Manawa and Waupaca County.

From farm boy to Bank President, from a lad who sold milk and eggs from door to door to President of a world-known producer of dairy products, from a humble beginning in a small local business to President of the powerful Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Carl Sturm never forgot his friends and neighbors. He was always one of them, quick and eager to assist those who needed help and inspiration. To all of them he was never "Mr. Sturm", but was always "Carl." He surely helped to make Manawa, Waupaca County, and Wisconsin what they are. Certainly he helped so much to make America the great country it is.

Carl Sturm is survived by his wife Ruth, his son Jack, a Major in the United States Army, a daughter-in-law Peggy, four grandchildren of Norristown, Pennsylvania, and three brothers, Clarence, Paul, and Arthur of Manawa.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday for Carl E. Sturm, the Rev. Carl F. Luedtke, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial was in Little Wolf Cemetery.
