Simon Peter Haenggi was born to Gottlieb and Magdalena (born Stebler) Hänggi in the village Nunningen, district Thierstein, canton Solothurn, Switzerland, on December 2, 1867. Succumbing to a stroke, he departed this life at his home in Olney township on January 6, 1953, at the age of 85 years, 1 month, and 4 days.
In Switzerland, he was baptized in the Roman Catholic Church. He served in the Swiss Army in the Sharp-Shooters Battalion. Immigrating to the U.S. in 1891, he did factory work in Chicago. On May 5, 1893, he married Caroline "Carrie" Custer. Leaving Chicago for a short time in Michigan, they eventually took on farming in Ford County, IL, where they lived near Carrie's Swiss immigrant parents. Simon and Carrie bought their Olney farm in 1919. Of the five children born to their union, three survive: Louis of Olney, and Mrs. Emilie Weller and Mrs. Emma Rosemeyer, both of Indianapolis, IN; Nellie and Rosa preceded him in death, as well as two sisters and three brothers. A sister Emma Hammel survives in Basel, Switzerland. He also leaves to mourn his passing seven grandchildren, six great-grand-children, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services were held in the Summers-Wilson Funeral Home January 8, 1953, led by Rev. Leland Hooper. Casket bearers: Russell Chaplin, Eugene Cutshall, Joy Jones, Leo Ritter, Leroy Weiss, and Cletus Zuber.

Note: No written record of a stillborn dgtr Nellie has been found - only oral history reported by a cousin.

Parents:
Magdalena Stebler (30 June 1831 - 31 Oct 1895) and Gottlieb Hänggi (14 Aug 1834 - 19 Jan 1913), married 16 Nov 1857.
Siblings:
One sister immigrated from Switzerland to Chicago in 1880 - Sophia (Haenggi) Schwaller Wellinger (1863-1943); she is buried in St. Joseph Cemetery, Cook County, River Grove, IL, and has a findagrave.com memorial page.
Five siblings remained in Switzerland -
Marie Magdalena Hänggi, born 26 March 1858 in Nunningen, married Karl Wohlgemuth 27 Sep 1879, and had four children (Leo, Albert, Hedwig, and Olga). Marie died 27 Apr 1926 in Seewen, and has living descendants in Europe in 2018 - some are known to have moved to Spain.
Emma Hänggi (also signed her name as Ema), born 17 Jun 1876 in Nunningen, married Hermann Hammel, and had four children. One son died very young, and the only daughter (also named Emma) died at age 17; two sons lived to adulthood (Hermann and Othmar). Emma (Simon's sister) died 5 Jan 1958 in Basel, and has living descendants in Switzerland in 2018.
Brothers Xaver and Adolf Hänggi each died at ages 20-21 (one a ski accident and the other either typhus or typhoid).
A third male sibling died of an illness in early childhood; his given name is unknown, but his gender and approximate age at death are documented on Simon's 1905 life insurance policy, in the family health section's sibling list.
