Emma James Purefoy was a daughter of Addison F. Purefoy and his wife Araminta Allen of Wake Forest, Wake County, North Carolina. She married Dr. William Louis Poteat(1856-1938), a professor at Wake Forest, on 24 June 1881. He was a son of James Poteat and his wife Julia Annis McNeill of Caswell County, NC.

William and Emma had three children: Dr. Hubert McNeill Poteat, Lousie Poteat (Mrs. Wheeler Martin, Jr.) and Helen Purefoy Poteat Stallings Marshall.
