Joe was born the son of John & Elizabeth Arens Hanten. In 1918 the family moved to Sioux Falls, SD. In 1930 the family moved to farm near Dundee, MN. Joe attended country school and later worked as a farm hand in the Fulda and Wilmont area. In April 1942 Joe was drafted in to the United States Army and served in Europe. Joe was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge and was honorably discharged in October 1945. Following his discharge he retuned to the Wilmont, MN area. On November 27, 1945 he and Josephine Balster were married at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Wilmont. Following their marriage they farmed near Wilmont until 1954 when they moved to a farm south of Fulda, MN. They retired in 1971 and built a home in Fulda. Joe remained busy helping area farmers with fieldwork and later stared his own carpenter business. In 1998 they sold their home and moved to Maple View Estates in Fulda. Josephine passed away on December 6, 2003. Joe remained in their apartment until 2004 when he became a resident of the Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Fulda. He was a member of St. Gabriel's Church in Fulda and also a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. Joe was a member of the Wilmont VFW Post # 2603, and the Disabled American Veterans. Joe enjoyed fishing and gardening.

Joe's siblings include John of Fulda, MN; George of Minneapolis, MN & Ruth Malloy of Sioux Falls, SD. Joe was preceded in death by one brother & seven sisters. Funeral services were held at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, Fulda, MN, Fr. Jeff Dobbs officiating.
