The family recollection is that Barbara, who had two physical defects, one of her small finger and one of her foot, was at the age of 24, "unmarriageable". Therefore, she was persuaded to be the housekeeper and caretaker of the eight children left when Philomena died at an early age to help the young widower, Steve Nemechek. She was in the home only a few months when they married on October 21, 1921, the same year as the death of Steve's first wife, Philomena. It should also be noted that Barbara's birthday is April 24, and the date of Philomena's death is also April 24.
